Mobile Number Portability Soon – MNP Draft Norms by TRAI

Mobile Number Portability or MNP was to actually arrive last year. However, it has been delayed many times and at the moment, it is set to arrive by September 2009 in most Metro Circles and few State Circles and by March 2010 to the other remaining Circles.
TRAI has recently released Draft Norms for this MNP which are as follows:
- There is a lock-in period of 90 days.
- Written Undertaking from Subscriber required to change provider.
- Subscriber will have to provide proof of no outstanding payments to gaining provider.
- The whole procedure should be finished within 5 days.
- Exact time of changeover should be intimated to the subscribers.
- If the porting is not seamless, gaining/new provider should provide list of missed calls and messages for the period of outage.
- Fee: It is expected to be around Rs. 300.
