TRAI – Minimum Broadband speeds – 2 Mbps
by DJ on Jul.31, 2009, under Broadband
Well, this is like a dream come. Well, not exactly – it is just one step forward in the right direction. TRAI has recommended that an Internet Connection to be labelled as Broadband should have a minimum speed of 2 Mbps. The current definition of broadband in India is an internet connection with atleast 256 Kbps speed.
Hence, ISP to market their services as broadband will have to offer minimum speeds of 2 Mbps. TRAI has said that the definition of Broadband has to be updated as broadband speeds in other countries are reaching 20 Mbps and we need to catch up on that to remain globally competitive. I hope this recommendation is accepted and implemented.
I however feel that private players (ISPs) will not like this recommendation and will come out with all sort of excuses and so called reasons as to why just a big jump in speed is not possible. None the less, I expect BSNL and MTNL to start offering such packages when this recommendation is accepted and then the private players will follow suite.
